Brandt Magic
ARTIST PHOTOGRAPHER PRINTMAKER BROADCAST & GRAPHIC DESIGNER

Quantel Paintbox
In the early 80s I began hearing about "Computer Graphics". The technology was brand new and there were few opportunities to work in the field. My first opportunity was at WCPX-TV (now WKGM). Their Art Star weather system had graphics capabilities and I had the opportunity to work on the computer.
A year later I was hired by WESH-TV. I was the only applicant with computer graphics experience and they were purchasing an Art Star weather system. Their system was installed in their Daytona Beach weather office an hour's drive away.
WESH's "sister station" in Houston had just purchased a dedicated graphics computer which would become the industry leader, Quantel Paintox. I was asked to go there to learn the system and create graphics for a news open.
WESH decided to purchase a Quantel Paintbox for its Orlando studio. It was the first paintbox system in the region. It was a quarter million dollar system at the time ($700,000 in 2025 dollars). It became an important workhorse in the stations "look". I was called upon to create illustrations for news stories, promotional spots, public service campaigns, and for advertising clients.
These images were created in NTSC standard definition and photographed on Polaroid film.
Major news stories required title graphics

Orlando City Hall

The Orlando City Hall was scheduled for demolition prior to construction of a new building. A film crew contracted to film the demolition with added special effects. I created concept images to use to promote the coverage of the event.

Space Shuttle Coverage

The Kennedy Space Center is in the WESH viewing area. As the "hometown" station for NASA, the station did live coverage of all of the Space Shuttle launches.
I had the responsibility of creating graphics for each launch. These were used in our promotional spots and as title graphics at the begging of each special report.
